Ten reasons I’m glad I was homeschooled

Excellent article by Ellen Densmore, Colorado Christian University student

“ 'Do you have any friends?' 'I wish I could stay in my pajamas all day.' 'I couldn’t stand being around my family all the time.' Those are just a few of the common questions and assertions I’ve grown up hearing as a student who was homeschooled all the way through 12th grade.

So, since you asked: Yes, I have friends; no, I don’t stay in my pajamas all day long; and I rather like my family, thank you. Homeschooling is an empowering institution—not a lazy one. It’s a system that builds family devotion, personal initiative, and communication skills, and allows individual passions and interests to drive each student. There are a plethora of reasons I’m thankful I was homeschooled from kindergarten through high school, and I’d like to share just 10 of those with you.

#1. Christian Worldview

Instead of being subjected to indoctrination in the state’s public school that have effectively eliminated God from the public square, I was educated in an environment where God was a key part of every aspect of life. The sciences are packed with evidence of His hand and design in creation; geography and social sciences are studies of His people; history is 'His-story,' and I grew up recognizing His divine plan for Israel, the world, and America. Beyond textbook schooling, my parents instilled me with what I like to call a 'worldview filter' through which I examine every book, movie, and song lyric. My Christian worldview is the foundation of my intellectual and spiritual identity.

Great Homeschool Convention

We attended the Great Homeschool Convention in Greenville, South Carolina, this weekend.  This year was our fourth year to attend.  We receive encouragement from being with so many other homeschool families from all across the Southeast, we attend some great sessions that challenge us toward godliness and discipline, we run into many old and new friends, we enjoy a fantastic exhibit hall filled with lots to explore, and we get to spend time in one of our favorite cities - and eat out several meals!  (This year's choices included The Clock drive-in, Southern Fried Green Tomatoes, and Chick-fil-A!) And we always come home with a new load of Adventures in Odyssey CD's!

The Secret of the Homeschooling Father

This is a message to fathers who are homeschooling. The question I want to answer is: Does Christianity provide much guidance to fathers about homeschooling?

I am going to say yes, but first I want to back up a bit.

You and your wife are in it together, so let us be honest. In practice, much of the heavy lifting, the hard work, the long hours of homeschooling, falls squarely on your wife’s shoulders. If your home is like ours, then it is your wife who is the star. Too many husbands—including me—behave more like bystanders than partners. In addition, there is the tendency for mothers to be undervalued and taken for granted. Be honest, most of us know we do not appreciate our wives as we should—and they know it too—but they keep laboring. Then include the fact that most mothers also run the household, preparing the meals, doing the laundry, changing the diapers, providing oodles of emotional support, taking care of all that cleaning up…all on such a regular basis that fathers forget just how much work is involved. Now, add in the reality that our modern culture encourages men to abdicate their manly responsibilities for boyish pleasures. Men are discouraged from growing up, and wives see this.
